Williamstown is a small city located in Wood County in northwest West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,996. It's considered part of the Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna WV-OH metropolitan area. The city of Williamstown is best known for being the home of the Fenton Art Glass Company. Founded in 1905 by brothers Frank L. and John W. Fenton, the Fenton Art Glass Company ranks among the worlds foremost producers of handmade art glass. Fenton is the largest manufacturer of hand made glass in the United States, and makes no two pieces of glass the same. Tours of the factory are available, which allow visitors to watch the master glassmakers at work. A museum and gift shop are also on the premises. Williamstown is situated near the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha Rivers. It is near Blennerhassett Island Park, which is located on a small island in the Ohio River. The park is accessed via sternwheeler riverboat from Point Park in Parkersburg. Other nearby attractions include North Bend Rail Trail, which stretches 72 miles through 13 tunnels, rural countryside and several historic sites. Rental bikes are available to ride the trail. Other outdoor activities in Williamstown include horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, camping and much more.
