Terra-Alta
is a small town located in Preston County in northeast West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 1,456 residents. The towns name literally means High Earth in Latin, and it sits at an elevation of 2,559 feet above sea level. Terra Alta is most well known for being home to Sunshine Daydream, a music park. The 45.5-acre campus serves as a home for the live-in operators as well as a stage and campground for music fans. The park mainly focuses their attention towards the classic rock bands of the 60s and 70s along with many new acts who perform much of the same genre of music. Many people refer to Sunshine Daydream as a place for "hippies." Terra Alta, also known as the "half-mile high community," was once famous as a health resort and for its extensive cranberry glades found nearby. North of town is Cranesville Swamp, a wilderness preserve noted for its marshy Canadian ecosystem. The Legislature of 1911 created a tuberculosis sanitarium located near Terra Alta. Now a private health facility, the health sanitarium located on a hill northeast of the town is ideal for patients in need of clean mountain air. Other nearby attractions include Alpine Lake Resort, which offers 15 miles of cross-country ski trails, tubing, sledding, a restaurant, club and 300 private homes.

Terra Alta Weather & Climate

Northeastern West Virginia has a four-season, mountainous climate. Due to its high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler, moister climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. Winters are typically cold and snowy. The elevation allows it to receive significant upslope snow, particularly during prolonged periods of northwesterly winds coming off the Great Lakes. Located along the spine of the central Appalachian Mountains, this region is often near the southwestern extreme of Nor'easters, getting significant snowfall from strong, Atlantic moisture-laden, easterly winds. Annual snowfall averages 160 inches. Nearly all snow falls from October through April.
