Kingwood
is a small town located in northeast West Virginia. It is the county seat for Preston County and is part of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, the population of Kingwood was 2,944 residents. The town was founded in 1815. The town of Kingwood is home to the Preston County Buckwheat Festival, one of the largest festivals in West Virginia. It's held on the last weekend of September and is famous for the Buckwheat cakes that are served all over the county of Preston during the festival. Buckwheat cakes are a sourdough cake that resembles a pancake yet has a very distinct taste that is all its own. The festival features arts and crafts, carnival rides and livestock. Kingwood is located in a very scenic area near the Cheat River, and includes the tip of the Monongahela National Forest. Outdoor activities in the area include white water rafting, hiking, biking, alpine and cross-country skiing, hunting and fishing. Other small town events in the area include the Cheat River Festival in Albright, the New Deal Festival in Arthurdale and the Terra Alta Fourth of July Celebration. Kingwood has gorgeous fall colors, pristine snow and cool summer days, which adds to the enjoyment this special region has to offer.

Kingwood Weather & Climate

Northeastern West Virginia has a four-season, mountainous climate. Due to its high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler, moister climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. Winters are typically cold and snowy. The elevation allows it to receive significant upslope snow, particularly during prolonged periods of northwesterly winds coming off the Great Lakes. Located along the spine of the central Appalachian Mountains, this region is often near the southwestern extreme of Nor'easters, getting significant snowfall from strong, Atlantic moisture-laden, easterly winds. Annual snowfall averages 160 inches. Nearly all snow falls from October through April.
