Shepherdstown is located in the extreme northeastern portion of the West Virginia panhandle. It's the oldest town in the state, nestled in the lower Shenandoah Valley, only 90 minutes from the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan areas. In 1734, Thomas Shepherd was granted 222 acres on the south side of the Potomac river. From that tract, he selected 50 acres and laid out a town that he named Mecklenburg. In 1798 it was renamed Shepherds Town, which was shortened to Shepherdstown after the Civil War. As of 2002, the population of the town was 1,208 residents. Shepherdstown is also home to Shepherd University. The town has been well preserved and many of the buildings were built prior to the Revolutionary War. The Shepherdstown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and the entire town was included in 1987. Many of the town's historical buildings on German Street are home to quaint shops and cafes. You'll also find lively festivals of the performing arts, like the nationally-acclaimed Contemporary American Theater Festival, and music and crafts events throughout the year. Every Thursday night, Appalachian heritage music can be enjoyed at OHurleys General Store, and other attractions include the Shepherdstown Opera House and a Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony.

Shepherdstown Weather & Climate

The extreme eastern portion of West Virginia ,where West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia meet, generally has a humid continental climate. This means warm to hot, humid summers and cool to cold winters, increasing in severity with elevation. However, the weather in all parts of the state is subject to rapid changes. Slightly more than half the rainfall occurs from April to September. In addition to persistent cloudy skies caused by the damming of moisture by the Alleghenies, West Virginia also experiences some of the most frequent precipitation in the nation. Snow usually lasts only a few days in the lower sections but may persist for weeks in the higher mountain areas. However, severe weather is somewhat less prevalent in West Virginia than in most other eastern states, and it ranks among the least tornado-prone states east of the Rockies.
