Cass is a small town nestled in the hills of Pocahontas County in northeastern West Virginia. Home to the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, less than 10 people actually lived in the town as of 2009. Founded in 1901, Cass began as a company town for those who worked for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, logging nearby Cheat Mountain. Those who worked in the mill or locomotive-repair shop lived with their families in 52 white-fenced houses, built in orderly rows on a hill south of the general store. Today, 20 of those houses have been refurbished into quaint tourist lodgings. The rest of the town consists of the general store, a restaurant and a history museum. The Cass Scenic Railroad offers excursions up the mountain, which provide views of a vast wilderness and close-up sights and sounds of original Shay steam-driven locomotives. The ride up the mountain includes two switchbacks, which allows the train to gain quick altitude. At this point, the train is traversing a grade of up to 11 percent. A 2 percent grade on conventional railroads is considered steep. The train stops at a recreated logging camp of the 1940s called Whittaker Station. If you chose to take the full 4 ½ hour trip, you will leave Whittaker Station and proceed to Bald Knob, the third highest point in West Virginia. The overlook at Bald Knob provides a spectacular view, and has a climate similar to Canada and is abundant in plants typical to the Canadian wilderness. Warm clothing is advised for this excursion that is truly an unforgettable experience.

Cass Weather & Climate

Northeastern West Virginia has a four-season, mountainous climate. Due to its high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler, moister climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. The elevation and geographic location allows it to receive significant upslope snow, particularly during prolonged periods of northwesterly winds coming off the Great Lakes. Located along the spine of the central Appalachian Mountains, this region is often near the southwestern extreme of Nor'easters, getting significant snowfall from strong, Atlantic moisture-laden, easterly winds. Annual snowfall averages 160 inches.
