Elkins is a town in Randolph County in northeastern West Virginia. It's located at the heart of West Virginia's Mountain Highlands region and is the "Gateway to the Monongahela National Forest." The population as of the 2000 census was 7,032 residents. Although it's the largest town in northern West Virginia, Elkins is quiet, safe and far removed from the hustle and bustle of the larger, modern urban areas. Elkins' quaint downtown is home to several one-of-a-kind shops, a community arts and theater and diverse dining venues. The town is also home to Davis and Elkins College. One of the most unique attractions in Elkins is the Augusta Heritage Center, which is part of the college and works to keep Appalachian cultural traditions alive in music, arts and crafts. Concerts and events are held throughout the summer, and there are celebrations of dulcimer-playing in April and fiddle music in October, but its major annual showcase is mid-Augusts Augusta Festival. This offers public workshops in such diverse down-home pursuits as banjo-playing, blacksmithing, quilt-making and folk dancing, and after dark, performers get together for a nightly hoedown, featuring storytellers, bluegrass bands and all-round good times. The nearby Monongahela National Forest offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, mountain climbing and camping.

However, it is rare for a major snowstorm to hit this area. Rainfall is spread out fairly evenly over the entire year. Thunderstorms are frequent during the late spring and throughout the summer, and occasionally can be quite violent. Tornadoes are very rare in the state of West Virginia. The driest period tends to be during the autumn months of September and October. Spring is the most unpredictable season. It's not unusual in the springtime for a warm, sunny day to be followed immediately by a chilly, rainy day.
