White-Sulphur-Springs
is a spa city located in Greenbrier County in southeast West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,315 residents. White Sulphur Springs was named for the clarity of the largest spring in the area, the white sulphur spring, which is now enclosed in a domed Doric spring house on the grounds of the city's world-famous resort, The Greenbrier. There is also a black sulphur spring in a second spring house also at the resort. White Sulphur Springs was formerly known as Dry Creek and is also known as the Spa City. The Greenbrier Resort is the town's largest employer. The city of White Sulphur Springs grew quickly in the first half of the nineteenth century and was known as the southern "Queen of the Watering Places." The springs resort first became the standard summer destination for wealthy Virginia low-country residents seeking reprieve from heat, humidity, and disease. As it increased in popularity, the town attracted more and more elite guests from all areas of the country. Today, the Greenbrier Resort remains one of the country's most luxurious and exclusive resorts. Recent residential development near The Greenbrier has attracted many international celebrities who have purchased second or third homes near the resort. The resort also has a golf history, having hosted the first Ryder Cup. Actually, golf in the United States began near White Sulphur Springs when the Montague family founded Oakhurst Links in 1884, making it the oldest organized golf club in the country.

White Sulphur Springs Weather & Climate

Southern West Virginia , near the Virginia border, has a mild, four-season climate. Within this region, the city of Bluefield prides itself on its hospitable climate. Since 1938 the Bluefield Chamber of Commerce has given free lemonade when the temperature has surpassed 90F. The city's motto is "nature's air conditioned city, where the summer spends the winter." Indeed, due to the high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler and more moist climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. Winters are typically cold and snowy. Nearly all snow falls from October through April. Severe storms, such as tornadoes, are rare in this region.
