Glen-Jean
is a small community located in Fayette County in southern West Virginia. At one time, the town was a center for the coal mining industry and a railroad junction, formerly boasting an opera house, several hotels and a company store. Much of the town has disappeared since the decline of the coal boom. One of the remaining structures, the Bank of Glen Jean, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Presently, Glen Jean is the headquarters of the New River Gorge National River, located across the street from the bank, which now functions as a visitor center. Other nearby attractions include the Gauley River National Recreation Area and the Bluestone National Scenic River. The Gauley River National Recreation Area protects a 25-mile portion of the Gauley River and a 5½-mile segment of the Meadow River. Little of the park is accessible via roads; one must travel via the river. Thousands of whitewater enthusiasts come to the Gauley River every autumn. Dropping more than 668 feet through 28 miles of rugged terrain, the Gauley Rivers complex stretch of whitewater features more than 100 rapids with a steep gradient, technical runs, an incredible volume of water and huge waves. Its vigorous rapids, scenic quality and inaccessibility combine to make Gauley River one of the premier whitewater runs in the world. The upper Gauley offers class III to V drops in steep, turbulent chutes. This section of the river requires experience and minimum age of 16. The lower Gauley is a 12-mile stretch, rated class III to V and requires a minimum age of 12-14.

South Central West Virginia is dominated by a humid continental climate, due to its geographical location in the higher elevations. Summers are very warm and humid and winters are cold and snowy. The humid continental climate is marked by variable weather patterns and a large seasonal temperature variance. Summers are often warm and humid with frequent thunderstorms and winters can be very cold with frequent snowfall and persistent snow cover. The seasonal temperature variance is typically 25-35C (45-63F) and increases as one moves further inland. Places with at least four months of average daily temperatures above 10 C (50 F) and at least one month below 0 C (32 F) or -3 C (26.6 F) depending on source, and which do not meet the criteria for an arid or semiarid climate, are classified as humid continental.
